Terrific deluxe meritage from Two Sisters

The Palladian style Two Sisters building sits grandly in the middle of the property, a good distance from the entrance off John St. E. in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It looks more like a the central bank of a small European country than a winery, but it's, you know, classy.  At the end of the entrance hall a giant window looks out over the vineyards, and the winery also features a casual italian restaurant called Kitchen76, serving pizzas and pastas. It was unfortunately not open the day I visited in early May.

I tried a small flight of wines (white, red and rose), and bought this, one of the finest Ontario red wines I've had for a long while. Very impressed.

Two Sisters Eleventh Post 2011. $39 (winery or online only).
Very powerful and nuanced nose of rich ripe red berry fruit, blackcurrant, slight smoky oak note and an earthy mushroom hint - rather a Bordeaux feel, with even a hint of mint. Quite bold acidity and the tannins are there, but somewhat smooth now in this medium-bodied five-year-old. Higher toned berry fruit notes on the palate, hint of chocolate, more smokiness and a long finish back to red fruit. This is a superb and very well integrated meritage blend worth at least 90 points. It's drinking well now, could even improve after another year or two. Steak frites anyone?

Note: the 2012 has now been released as well.
